Diving Photos - Ed C
I wasn't originally a shutterbug. My parents bought me a Kodak Instamatic Cartridge camera when I was 10 or 11, and I shot roll after roll for about a year until I grew tired of it. (Some day I'll scan or toss the twenty rolls I took back then...)
For some reason, underwater photography originally didn't appeal to me. Perhaps it was because I've always had a camera, but never been a real shutterbug. I'd guess I never felt I was particularly good at it.
So it was with surprise that my great friend and mentor, Dave Read, offered to loan me his Ikelite Aquashot Underwater Camera for my 1997 dive trip to Cozumel, Mexico. I was initially concerned about my lack of photographic skills, but with twenty minutes' help from Dave and his Aquashot Tips, I had great success! I took three rolls of film with some incredibly vivid and colorful scenes. I loved it so much that I bought my own Aquashot 3E (using the Fuji Endeavor) with a Substrobe 50 -- what an improvement!
And in fall 2000 I did it -- I broke down and bought a professional photographic package! A Nikon N90s with 60mm and 24mm lenses, an Ikelite SLR housing, plus an Ike substrobe 100A and the associated cables and ports. My first run was in November 2000, and I LOVE it!! Beth is now diving an Olympus C4000 with an Ikelite housing, Ikelite DS125A strobe, and together we are going crazy with photography.r Check out our trip write-ups in the link below!
Interestingly, the Nikon has somewhat rekindled my interest in non-diving photography, but not so much that I grab it whenever the weather is nice. (Beth does, however.) Yet I still have a blast when the mood hits me -- check out a few of my Bonaire surface shots from various locations, including the Bonaire Washington-Slagbaai park!
And next on my list: Planning to buy a Nikon D-70 and go digital! Underwater photos with immediate feedback - it'll be so sweet!
Diving Photos - Beth
Beth started out sharing the Aquashot IIIe camera with me on our dives, and quickly progressed to taking quality photos. While she's been far more of a photographer than Ed, now that she has her Olympus and housing, she's an incredible shutterbug - watch for her awesome photos coming soon!
When the weather is nice, we're out on a drive, or even just
when the mood hits her, her Olympus is on her shoulder and ready for
rapid deployment. She's the real shutterbug in the
Christians' family! While I only picked up the camera after scuba
sparked me, she's been taking photos at family and friends events,
documenting her travel, and generally keeping a visual memory of
everything we do.
